Furnace Troubleshooting Steps to Try If Your Heat Isn’t Working

Not sure what to do if your heat is out? Try a few of these tips, straight from our Bryant® experts:

  • Make sure your thermostat is set to the “heat” position.

  • If you have a digital thermostat, check that its batteries are working.
  • Check your thermostat to make sure it’s set to a temperature warmer than your home air.
  • Ensure heating vents are open and unblocked throughout your home.
  • Look at the power switch on your furnace to make sure it’s set to “on.” This switch must remain on year-round for operation of both the furnace and air conditioner.
  • Make sure the circuit breakers in the electrical panel are in the “on” position. Bad weather and lightning can occasionally cause breakers to trip.
  • Change your furnace filter frequently to avoid HVAC air flow problems. All one-inch furnace filters should be replaced monthly and two-inch filters every other month. These are just guidelines—if you have pets or a heavy smoker in your home, change the filter more often.
